About the work

Colloquy names a conversation or exchange. In Marion Adnams’s Surrealist world, the word opens the possibility that forms might appear to address one another, gaining unfamiliar lives through their relationships. Painted in 1968, the work belongs to her sustained transformation of natural forms and everyday encounters into scenes that hover between recognition and strangeness.

About the artist

Marion Adnams (1898–1995) was a British artist who lived for most of her life in Derby. Initially trained as a language teacher, she attended Derby School of Art and qualified as an art teacher in 1938. Around that time she began developing the Surrealist approach for which she became known.

Natural objects found on walks and during visits to southern France often provided the starting points for her paintings. Removed from their everyday settings and brought into unexpected relationships, these forms acquire an unfamiliar presence. Derby Museums holds a substantial body of her work and has presented exhibitions that establish her individual contribution to British Surrealism.
