About the work
Dual Pot, pg. 92 brings the suggestion of a printed page into a painting of substantial scale. Its title invites a movement between images and the settings in which they are encountered. Made in 2016, the work connects with Ella Kruglyanskaya’s attention to pictorial conventions, where a painting can make us conscious of how images are constructed as well as what they show.
About the artist
Ella Kruglyanskaya is a painter born in Riga, Latvia, in 1978. She studied at Cooper Union and received an MFA from Yale School of Art in 2006. Her paintings and drawings use the possibilities of figurative representation to examine female subjectivity and the conventions through which bodies are pictured.
Graphic lines, emphatic shapes and carefully staged relationships between figures and backgrounds give her work a strong visual immediacy. Humour and self-awareness can complicate the apparent directness of an image. Her exhibitions include presentations at Studio Voltaire, Tate Liverpool and Bonner Kunstverein, placing her work within an international conversation about contemporary painting.
