About the work

Couple III places a pair at the centre of a watercolour, connecting with the scenes of courtship and everyday life found throughout Béla Kádár’s practice. Made around 1920, the work belongs to a period in which his visual language drew together European modernism and Hungarian storytelling. The intimacy of paper offers a close encounter with those intersecting worlds.

About the artist

Béla Kádár was a Hungarian modernist born in 1877. His paintings and drawings brought together elements of Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and other European movements with subjects rooted in Hungarian life and storytelling. Courtship, domestic scenes and legendary figures recur in his work.

His changing styles reflect a willingness to combine different visual languages rather than remain within a single movement. His work was shown internationally during the 1920s and early 1930s, including in Berlin and New York.
