About the work
Roses, lilac and other flowers gather in a vase on a stone ledge. The arrangement brings individual blooms into a composed relationship of colour, texture and abundance. Attributed to the circle of Joseph-Laurent Malaine, the painting belongs to a tradition in which close observation of flowers meets the artifice of still life. Its floral subject connects independent painting with the decorative arts in which Malaine specialised.
About the artist
The designation ‘circle of Joseph-Laurent Malaine’ places an unidentified painter within the artistic context of the flower painter Joseph-Laurent Malaine (1745–1809).
Malaine trained in Tournai, following his father Renier-Joseph into flower painting. Appointed a flower painter for the Gobelins manufactory in 1787, he connected independent painting with decorative manufacture and exhibited at the Paris Salons between 1791 and 1808. His career offers a setting for understanding the close relationship between floral still life and the decorative arts.
