Eggland I

Joseph Clark Collection · JCC-0049

About the work

Eggland I belongs to Yukako Shibata’s exploration of colour as an experience shaped by light and space. Her practice moves between painting and sculptural form, attending to the way a surface can appear to change with its surroundings. The work invites a patient kind of looking, in which colour is encountered through relationships rather than as a fixed property.

About the artist

Yukako Shibata is a Japanese artist born in Otaru, Hokkaido, in 1972. She moved to London in 1993 and completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2005. Her work explores the experience of colour through the interaction of painted forms, light, shadow and surrounding space.

Although grounded in painting, her practice often takes sculptural form. Colour can appear to shift or extend beyond the surface of an object, making perception part of the work.
