About the work

This 1988 collage offers a paper-based encounter with Mary Miss’s exploration of space and perception. Across her practice, fragments, structures and viewpoints become ways of reconsidering a place. Collage provides a related means of bringing separate elements together, allowing an image to be understood through relationships rather than a single continuous view.

About the artist

Mary Miss is an American artist born in 1944 whose work crosses sculpture, architecture, landscape and urban design. Since the early 1970s she has developed projects that make the histories and environmental conditions of places perceptible through direct experience.

Collaboration with architects, engineers, ecologists and public bodies is central to her practice. Rather than treating a public artwork as an isolated monument, she attends to how people move through and understand a site. In 2009 she initiated City as Living Laboratory, a framework for involving artists in public conversations about sustainability. Drawings, collages and models form part of this wider investigation of space and perception.
