About the work

This 1975 oil on paper offers an intimate encounter with Ray Parker’s abstract practice. Colour and the relationships between forms become subjects in their own right, inviting the eye to move through the composition without the guidance of a depicted scene. The paper support provides a distinct setting for concerns that Parker also explored across larger canvases.

About the artist

Ray Parker (1922–1990), also recorded as Raymond Parker, was an American abstract painter and teacher. His work is associated with Abstract Expressionism, Colour Field painting and the movement described as Post-Painterly Abstraction. Across these overlapping contexts, colour and the relationship between forms became central subjects in their own right.

Parker's work entered the Whitney Museum's collection in 1958, and he participated in several of its annual exhibitions.
