About the work

The Blue Barn brings a named colour and an architectural form together in watercolour. Its title offers a starting point between observation and invention, leaving the painting open to the movement of colour across paper. Made in 2022, the work belongs to Fabian Peake’s wide-ranging practice, in which painting, writing and constructed forms explore the expressive possibilities of everyday things.

About the artist

Fabian Peake is an artist and writer based in London. He studied painting at Chelsea College of Art and the Royal College of Art and taught in the Fine Art department at Manchester Metropolitan University. His practice has expanded from painting to include drawing, photography, cut-outs, tailored wall pieces, writing and poetry.

The relationship between visual and verbal composition is a continuing part of his work. His first poetry collection, Loose Monk, appeared in 2014, while recent wall pieces use combinations of canvas, linen and other fabrics. Peake has exhibited in Britain and internationally, maintaining a practice in which different materials and forms of expression remain in conversation.
