About the work
Paint becomes sculptural material in this untitled wall work by Twan Janssen. Rather than serving only to describe an image, acrylic acquires a physical presence against its wooden support. The work asks the viewer to attend to paint as a substance, bringing the boundary between painting and sculpture into focus.
About the artist
Twan Janssen is a Dutch artist born in Milsbeek in 1968. He has described his public role as that of an actor playing an artist, treating exhibitions and objects as parts of a deliberately constructed career. This framing questions how artistic identity and institutional recognition produce value.
His material practice gives acrylic paint an unusually independent role. Rather than functioning only as a coating on a support, paint can become strips, ribbons, knots or other sculptural forms. These works unsettle the boundary between painting and object while retaining the decorative and tactile possibilities of the material.
