About the work
Peace in My Purse places a state of mind inside a familiar personal object. The phrase suggests that calm might be carried or contained, giving the everyday a psychological charge. Made in 2004, the painting connects with Meta Isæus-Berlin’s interest in the point where domestic familiarity becomes uncertain, opening ordinary experience to unexpected emotional associations.
About the artist
Meta Isæus-Berlin is a Swedish artist born in Stockholm in 1963. Trained at Konstfack and the Royal Institute of Art, she first became widely known for installations that altered familiar domestic objects and situations. Her practice also includes painting and sculpture.
Memory, time and the instability of familiar surroundings recur across her work. The movement between everyday experience and strangeness links her paintings with her installations. Her work has been presented internationally, including a substantial mid-career exhibition at Liljevalchs in Stockholm in 2006.
