About the work
Sixteen layers of canvas give unusual emphasis to the support beneath this painting. Its title, Ouch, that really almost hurt, brings humour to the anticipation of bodily sensation: pain is announced and then held at a distance. Together, wording and construction invite attention to the physical presence of a painted object and the expectations we bring to it.
