About the work
ae2 belongs to Craig Robertson’s exploration of copying, memory and imperfect likeness. A form can preserve traces of a source while also departing from it, making recognition something uncertain rather than fixed. The sculpture’s wax component connects that enquiry with a material sensitive to its surroundings, bringing physical change into a practice concerned with the instability of remembered experience.
About the artist
Craig Robertson is a Scotland-born sculptor based in London. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and has participated in the MASS mentorship programme. Casting and copying are central to his practice, particularly the imperfect replication of existing objects.
Robertson describes his work in relation to isolation, disrupted memory and the distance between individual experience and accepted ideas of the self. Rather than using a cast simply to reproduce an original, his approach allows differences and uncertainties to remain visible. These transformations create a way of questioning how objects are recognised, how memories are reconstructed and how a convincing likeness can still depart from its source.
His exhibition record includes FACE with the Society of Portrait Sculptors and OPENART at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2023, Fragile at The Bomb Factory in 2024, and Shadows of the Otherworld at the Crypt Gallery and CHIMERA at Thames-Side Gallery in 2025. He also participated in rose is a rose at #57w57arts in New York in 2025.
