About the work
This untitled oil painting on panel belongs to Hugo Scheiber’s contribution to European modernism. Across his practice, an energetic pictorial language brought new intensity to figures and scenes of modern life. The work offers an encounter with painting as a means of transformation, in which the organisation of the image can become as compelling as its subject.
About the artist
Hugo Scheiber (1873–1950) was a Hungarian modernist whose paintings and works on paper explored the visual energy of modern life. Performance and urban entertainment recur among his subjects, bringing figures into emphatic relationships of colour, line and movement.
His work is represented in museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which holds Carnival.
