About the work
Couple extends Jac Leirner’s interest in the arrangement of ordinary forms into lithography. The title foregrounds a relationship between two elements, inviting attention to position, interval and the meanings that arise through proximity. Made with Edinburgh Printmakers for her 2017 Fruitmarket exhibition, it was Leirner’s first lithographic print, opening a new material setting for her precise approach to composition.
About the artist
Jac Leirner is a Brazilian artist born in São Paulo in 1961. Her work brings everyday materials into carefully ordered arrangements, finding sculptural possibilities in objects that are usually used, circulated or discarded. Collection, repetition and the relationship between an object's previous function and its new presentation are recurring concerns.
Her 2017 exhibition at Fruitmarket brought this practice to Edinburgh. In conjunction with that presentation she made Couple, her first lithographic print, in collaboration with Edinburgh Printmakers. The edition extends an established attention to arrangement and relationships between things into the different technical conditions of printmaking.
