About the work
Carbonara uses nail varnish on paper, bringing a material associated with bodily adornment into image-making. Its change of setting encourages attention to colour and surface beyond the material’s everyday function. The work belongs to the visual practice of Machine Woman, also known as Anastasia Vtorova, whose activity spans art and experimental electronic music.
About the artist
Machine Woman is the artistic name of Anastasia Vtorova, an artist, electronic musician, DJ, curator and mentor. Her public practice centres on experimental club music while also encompassing visual work and projects that support other artists.
She runs Sonic Disturbances as a label and a monthly programme on Subtle Radio, and produces MWTV, an interview series devoted to contemporary electronic music. Her work has been presented at Tate Modern and at festivals including Mutek, Dark Mofo and Atonal. Releases and remixes have appeared through labels including Delsin, Ninja Tune, Domino, Phantasy and DFA, and her music is represented in the British Library Sound Archive.
This combination of production, performance and artist development places collaboration and circulation alongside individual works.
