About the work

Screen Capture was shown in Michael Hill’s 2022 exhibition 1+9+8+4=22, a sequence of twenty-two paintings responding to George Orwell’s novel and its echoes in contemporary life. The title brings the language of digital images into that literary setting. It invites reflection on the relationship between seeing, recording and the ways experience becomes an image.

About the artist

Michael Hill is a self-taught abstract artist associated with Derby’s Banks Mill Studios. His practice centres on experimentation with materials, surfaces and methods of applying paint. Contrasts of colour and texture provide starting points for compositions developed through making.

His 2022 exhibition 1+9+8+4=22 brought together twenty-two paintings responding to George Orwell’s novel and its relevance to contemporary experience.
