About the work
An everyday bottle provides a starting point for this work by Michael Hill. A recognisable object can also act as a framework for exploring colour, texture and the spaces around a form. The painting belongs to Hill’s experimental approach to image-making, in which familiar subjects remain open to the discoveries of the painting process.
About the artist
Michael Hill is a self-taught abstract artist associated with Derby’s Banks Mill Studios. His practice centres on experimentation with materials, surfaces and methods of applying paint. Contrasts of colour and texture provide starting points for compositions developed through making.
His 2022 exhibition 1+9+8+4=22 brought together twenty-two paintings responding to George Orwell’s novel and its relevance to contemporary experience.
