About the work
This silkscreen reproduction presents the composition of Eduardo Chillida’s Barcelona I, created in 1971. Form and surrounding space operate together, with boundaries suggesting enclosure, contact and interruption. The image connects with questions that run through Chillida’s sculpture and graphic work: how a shape occupies space, and how the space around it becomes equally active.
About the artist
Eduardo Chillida (1924–2002) was a Spanish sculptor born in San Sebastián. He began architectural studies in Madrid before turning to sculpture, initially working in plaster in Paris and later developing abstract forms in iron after settling in Hernani. His materials expanded to include wood, steel, alabaster, concrete and terracotta.
Chillida's work explores the relationship between solid form and surrounding space. His public sculptures were conceived in dialogue with their settings, while drawings and graphic works offered another scale for investigating those relationships. Chillida Leku, established in Hernani in 2000, brings together a substantial part of his legacy within a landscape setting.
