Hugo Glendinning

Nigel Charnock No. 1, from The Naked City Pictures, 1995

Joseph Clark Collection · JCC-0012

About the work

Nigel Charnock’s curled body lies near the edge of a broad paved space, surrounded by the repeated geometry of the surrounding architecture. The small, exposed figure interrupts the scale and order of the city. Made in 1995 as part of The Naked City Pictures, the photograph draws on Hugo Glendinning’s sustained engagement with performance, giving a still gesture the tension of an unfolding event.

About the artist

Hugo Glendinning is a British photographer and filmmaker based in London whose practice spans portraiture, contemporary art, theatre and dance. He works both with performances made for the camera and with the documentation of live events, developing images through long relationships with artists and performers.

His visual-art collaborators have included Martin Creed, Paola Pivi, Matthew Barney, Dan Colen, Yinka Shonibare and Franko B. In experimental theatre and dance, he has photographed Forced Entertainment, DV8, Candoco, Michael Clark and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker. These different settings place the camera between observation and collaboration: a photograph can preserve a performance while also creating a distinct encounter with gesture, space and duration.

Glendinning has exhibited and published internationally and has taught as a visiting lecturer. He held an AHRC fellowship in the University of Exeter’s Department of Drama from 2008 to 2011.
