About the work

Pink and purple establish a starting point for looking at this acrylic work on paper. Differences of colour, opacity and texture give painted passages their individual presence, while their proximity brings them into conversation. The work connects with Michael Hill’s experimental approach to painting, in which the behaviour of paint and the decisions made during its application help shape the image.

About the artist

Michael Hill is a self-taught abstract artist associated with Derby’s Banks Mill Studios. His practice centres on experimentation with materials, surfaces and methods of applying paint. Contrasts of colour and texture provide starting points for compositions developed through making.

His 2022 exhibition 1+9+8+4=22 brought together twenty-two paintings responding to George Orwell’s novel and its relevance to contemporary experience.
