Naomi Gilon
Big Paw
Joseph Clark Collection · JCC-0004
About the work
Big Paw belongs to Naomi Gilon’s world of exaggerated bodily forms and fantastic creatures. The title turns attention towards a fragment of a body, at once familiar and strange. Across Gilon’s practice, paws, hands and claws blur the boundaries between sculpture, accessory and imagined being. Their appeal lies partly in that uncertainty: something playful can also feel unruly or unsettling.
About the artist
Naomi Gilon (born Arlon, Belgium, 1996) is a Brussels-based artist working across sculpture, ceramics, fashion and design. Her practice explores bodily transformation and the construction of identity through objects that combine familiar functions with fantastic or unsettling forms.
Hands, feet, paws and exaggerated claws recur throughout her work. Ceramics offer a particularly expressive material: their fragility contrasts with the apparent aggression or strength of the forms, while coloured surfaces introduce attraction and humour. References range from mythology and horror to contemporary popular culture, bringing imaginary creatures into the scale of things that can be held, worn or used.
Gilon’s collaborations have included reworking handbags with Marc Jacobs and a project with Han Kjøbenhavn associated with a dress worn by Julia Fox in 2022. These exchanges extend the relationship between sculpture and the dressed body.
