Tamsin Relly
Colour Study – Blobs 1 (Magenta, Lemon Yellow, Cobalt Blue)
Joseph Clark Collection · JCC-0003
About the work
Magenta, lemon yellow and cobalt blue provide the starting points for this exploration of colour. The study invites attention to the way one colour changes in the presence of another, and to the expressive possibilities of edges, mixtures and overlapping passages. Relly’s painting and printmaking often approach the natural world through fluidity and change; here, colour itself becomes the subject.
About the artist
Tamsin Relly is a South African artist whose paintings and prints explore relationships between people, memory and the natural world. Born in Rooi-Els in 1981, she moved to London in 2009 and completed an MA at City & Guilds of London Art School in 2011. Her practice includes watercolour and monotype, processes that allow colour to spread, overlap and retain the traces of their making.
Ecological concerns sit alongside an interest in emotional experience and wellbeing. Relly has also worked with Hospital Rooms, bringing artistic activity into mental healthcare settings. Her works invite close attention to colour and change without requiring a single fixed reading.
