About the work
Martin Creed’s familiar reassurance becomes both a promise and a question. Its directness invites belief, yet its meaning changes with the mood and circumstances of the person reading it. In this print, language operates as a material: a sentence can offer comfort, provoke doubt or make us smile. The work belongs to Creed’s wider exploration of how simple gestures can hold contradictory feelings.
About the artist
Martin Creed is a British artist whose practice moves between visual art, music and performance. Born in Wakefield in 1968, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1986 to 1990. His numbered works often begin with ordinary materials, familiar phrases or simple actions, asking how modest changes can alter an experience.
Creed's economy of means allows humour, uncertainty and feeling to coexist. A phrase, an object or a repeated gesture can carry both reassurance and doubt. Music and live performance are integral to this practice, extending his interest in rhythm, repetition and the relationship between a work and its audience.
Exhibitions such as What’s the Point of It? at London’s Hayward Gallery in 2014 brought together the breadth of this practice. His recurring Half the air in a given space installations use balloons to make an apparently abstract measurement physically tangible. Such works depend on simple rules but leave room for unpredictable encounters.
